Accounting student was airport suicide bomber, Moscow media say

February 7, 2011

Monsters and Critics, 4 Feb 2011: Forensic experts have determined the identity of the suicide bomber who killed himself and 36 other people at Domodedovo airport – an accounting student from the North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, Moscow media reports said Friday.

The forensic researchers, going by DNA evidence taken from the scene, identified the bomber as a 20-year-old who apparently was ‘pumped full’ of drugs before he carried out the January 24 attack.

Investigators declined to either confirm or deny the reports.

In the immediate aftermath of the bombing, investigators said those behind the attack must have come from the conflict-ridden North Caucasus region.

The bombing suspect is said to have broken off his studies last year and joined armed groups in the region. His parents and siblings however knew nothing of this.

The head of Russia’s domestic intelligence service FSB, Alexander Bornikov, had informed President Dmitry Medvedev of the suicide bomber’s identity.

Meanwhile Moscow chief prosecutor Yuri Syomin wanred Friday of the danger of further attacks in the Russian capital, saying ‘the danger remains.’

In the Muslim-dominated republics of Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan, numerous radical Islamist groups have been fighting for an independent ’emirate’ in the North Caucasus.
